Workshop Description:

According to Utah State’s Public Health Indicator Base Information System (IBIS), Utah had the fifth highest age adjusted suicide rate in the nation during the 2017 to 2019 period. In 2019 it was the leading cause of death for both adolescents and young adults. Approximate 70 Utahns per day in 2019 were hospitalized for self-inflicted injuries. This emphasizes the importance for all clinicians to be aware of risk factors for suicide, screening and assessment techniques and instruments, short term safety interventions built for present moment prevention, and longer term empirically supported treatments. This workshop will review and reemphasize the importance of knowing risk factors, assessing for them and appropriately intervening. In the case of necessary longer term treatment for suicide, understanding and knowing what empirically supported treatment there are and their rationale to allow for proper treatment or referral.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify risk factors that are correlated with suicidal behaviors.
  • Implement assess for, discuss, and implement Lethal Means Safety Counseling with a client.
  • Understand available effective empirically supported treatments for suicide
