Abstract

This workshop will provide an overview of the protocol-driven intervention of Prolonged Exposure (PE) for the treatment of PTSD. This intervention is an Evidence-Based approach developed by Edna Foa, PhD and colleagues that has been adopted by the VA Healthcare System as one of the primary treatments offered to veterans with PTSD.

The workshop will begin with a review of the diagnosis of PTSD and expected changes in the diagnostic criteria for the pending DSM-V. Discussion will then move on to the theory and treatment of PTSD from a PE perspective. This will include discussion of the research guiding the development of the treatment.

The presenter will then provide a session-by-session overview of PTSD. Included in this, is how to explain the rationale for PE, learning how to structure imaginal and in vivo exposures, troubleshooting, and provider stress in delivering PE.
Case vignettes will be covered in the delivery of PE. Since Dr. Mullin works primarily with combat PTSD, there will be an emphasis on the application of PE to veterans. Despite this, PE is applicable to non-veteran populations and was originally designed for the treatment of sexual trauma.

The main purpose of this workshop is to provide peer-to-peer discussion about the use of Prolonged Exposure in the treatment of PTSD. It is not designed to provide "official" certification in the delivery of Prolonged Exposure.
