 Utah Psychological Association presents:

Surviving & Thriving as Psychologists: Empathic Distress and Wellbeing

Ashley Greenwell, PhD

Overview:

This presentation will review myths around the concept of compassion fatigue for helping professions. It will include an updated discussion of new developments in social neuroscience informing our understanding of the short-term and long-term processes that unfold when we sit with suffering.  An overview of the unique role of compassion for both healing our patients and ourselves will be provided. Finally, a practical resiliency plan that addresses common barriers for providers will be elucidated.

Objectives:

Participants in this will be able to:

  • Differentiate commonly used terms in the field of clinician burnout and resiliency (e.g. compassion fatigue, emotional contagion, empathic distress, etc.), and apply them to their own clinical practice.
  • Identify behaviors and patterns that exacerbate or prevent clinician burnout.
  • Develop an individualized plan that addresses their own vulnerability and resiliency factors.

Rates and Payment Information:

This presentation is sponsored by the Early Career Psychology Committee and will be offered free of charge. One continuing education unit will be offered to interested individuals at a cost of $25.
